[Kartbuilding] Fwd: gear ratio question

Hi Andrew,

Are you sure that the Stihl Chainsaw motor is 4hp? It could be - I was
just wondering.

Anyways - if it is 4 horsepower, then a standard gear ratio would be 5:1.
It also depends on the size of your rear sprocket. The larger your rear
wheels - the faster you go - but the higher gear ratio you need.
So if you have small 12" (300mm) diameter wheels - then 5:1 would be a
good ratio for that terrain.

Best of Luck

with a slightly more advanced steering system i designed. im using a
STIHL MS310 chainsaw motor. it is 59.3 cc and 4hp. my neighbors have
40 acres with trails running all through it. the trails aren't that
bad. they're mellow enough to take a golf-kart on. so now to the
question: what size sprocket should i put on the engine and what size
on the axle? i might also occasionally drive it on pavement. thanks
for your help.
