Hi Brian,

What is the physical size of the "old race car motor" you have? If its 
from a proper racing car, then Im afraid your out of luck. Typically the 
race kart plans will only take engines of 250 or 350cc max, and even with 
that there would be a whole lot of setting up of the radiator etc.

Typically smaller air-cooled two-stroke engines are the best.
