Gearboxes and clutches tend to be heavy and in some cases heavier than an engine. Typically you would use/get a motorcycle engine which would come with a clutch and gearbox all built-in. CVT is typically done using a torque converter which is belt driven. So if you can get/buy a good proper CVT/Torque converter - then this will be the easiest solution. Ask some neighbours and you should be able to get it done no problem. Even if you ask at a local hardware store - they should be able to put you in touch with someone who can make two front stub axles for you. You could ask a Metalwork teacher in a local high school also. A fellow kart builder made an electric kart and allowed me to upload a document he wrote on it. See: http://kartbuilding.net/other_karts/Making_an_Electric_Vehicle.pdf Apart from that, in my opinion, there is not much different in terms of the steering, axles and chassis from an Electric Kart to that of a normal kart. Two common sets of ordinary plans can be found on the kartbuilding.net website. See: http://kartbuilding.net/racingkart/index.html http://kartbuilding.net/Freeplans/plans.htm If you have any specific questions, just drop us an email. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <54457030.9090201@sburke.eu> Hi Scott, I don't have a complete Parts List for that Racing Kart. All I have is a labelled overview at: http://kartbuilding.net/racingkart/Free_Racing_Kart_Plans_PDF/Main_Kart_Complete_02_Labelled_Overview.pdf Those plans were based off the following photographic plans I had on: http://kartbuilding.net/racingkart/Old_Racing_Kart/racingkart.htm It would be useful taking a look at that page also as I've materials required listed on it. If you do get to making the kart yourself - and come up with a list of parts you bought, it would be great if you could forward on the list. For simple chassis take a look at the following PDF: http://kartbuilding.net/The_NatSKA_Guide_to_Karts_and_Karting/Pages-1-10-11-12-13-Chassis-Design.pdf For Transmission - you may be limited in what you can choose. Using a centrifugal clutch and chain would be my preferred option. See: http://blog.kartbuilding.net/2007/06/26/using-a-centrifugal-clutch-and-chain-drive/ However if you have to go up hills and off-road, you may have to use a torque converter.
