Hi John,

I simply used a 3/4" (20mm) diameter solid steel round bar for the axle.
See: http://www.kartbuilding.net/woodenkart/rear_axle.htm

As for sizes of v belt pulleys:
I used a 35mm diameter v belt pulley on the engine, and a 200mm diameter v
belt pulley on the rear axle. I had a difficult time getting the 200mm
diameter v belt pulley as it is quite big. I eventually got it from an old
gas/petrol pump. The large v belt pulleys from washing machines are a bit
light and may break.

Best of luck,
-steve
