Hi Dan,

If you have not made any type of kart before, I would recommend making a 
wooden one to begin with. You can then add a lawnmower engine to it:

If you want however, you can make a general purpose kart with a metal 
chassis. See: http://kartbuilding.net/Freeplans/plans.htm

I myself when I was growing up, made the wooden kart first, and then 
afterwards I moved up and made the kart with a metal chassis.

The only other advise I can give you is to look over the kartbuilding 
website, look at the other types of karts and the photo gallery at:
http://kartbuilding.net/gallery/
